Why do you participate in Artists@Work? What do you expect from this experience?
I participate in Artists@Work because it is a great opportunity to learn with Ateliers Varan, a very famous place for documentary cinema. It's also the idea to meet new people, share anothers views of point in cinematography creation and finaly improve an audiovisual expression. This new experience begin at the same time as my PhD, I hope the project can make stronger my research in visual studies.
Explain the main thematics of your project
The project is leading by Claire, Julie and myself as the editor. Claire and Julie are both directors. We have the desire of filming a shared apartment situation between a french citizen and an asylum seeker. We're interested in the idea of sharing intimacy with a migrant as a new reflection in immigration's topic. We don't want to film immigration status as a mass of anonymous people in trouble, we hope to see a very specific relationship moving, growing and lived by two different people.
We want to question the role of the solidarity, diversity and international relationship. Maybe, we will speak of the story of Léo and Zakir, filming their everyday lives together (these characters are not absolutely sure that's why I don't want to tell to much).
Explain the different stages of production of your work
Before the project officially started, Claire had already developed a relationship with several associations in Paris who connect a french citizen with an asylum seeker. Thanks to theses association, Claire and Julie may meet foster familly and migrants. After seeing all these people, they finally spoke with Leo and Zakir and choose them for the film. At this stage, only few photographies have been taken in their appartment. Both are agreed to be filming and share with us their "almost normal life".
Then, claire and Julie started to improve their technical work together by filming meetings and privates discussions. They practice a lot to be ready for the "real" shooting. Claire and Julie need to continue developing our relation with Zakir et Léo and be confortable with each others. It take time to feel trust and right now, it is the challenge.
